How to Write Vibe Coding Prompts That Actually Work (With Examples)
Updated September 24, 2026 · VibeCoder U by FlowState AI
A good vibe coding prompt asks for one thing, names the screens and data involved, says what "done" looks like, and asks the AI to explain how to test it. Start every project with a project brief, then send one step at a time instead of a single "build me an app" message.
The five parts of a strong prompt
- One goal. One feature or change per prompt.
- Context. Which page or screen, and what already exists.
- Specifics. Field names, labels, rules and messages. Don't make the AI guess.
- Guardrails. What not to change, and to ask before assuming.
- A test. Ask the AI to tell you exactly how to check it worked.
Weak prompt vs. strong prompt
Here's the difference in practice. The weak version leaves everything to guesswork:
Make a contact form.
Add a database table called contacts with these fields: name, email, phone, message, status (default 'New'), and date submitted. Connect the contact form so every submission saves a new row automatically. After submit, show: 'Thanks, we'll be in touch!' Validate that name and email are filled in and the email is a real email format. When you're done, tell me exactly how to test it.
Start with a project brief
Paste a short brief before your first build prompt so the AI understands the whole project:
We are building: [what it is] for [business name]. About the client: [what they do]. Location / service area: [city or area]. Must-have features: [list them]. Look and feel: [style]. Ground rules for this whole build: design mobile-first with large readable text. Never invent facts, reviews, prices, or statistics about the business; if you need information, ask me. Keep all secret keys on the server. Validate every form on the server. Build one step at a time and tell me how to test each step. Ask me before making big assumptions.
The fix prompt
When something breaks, don't just say "it's broken." Use this pattern:
Something is wrong. What I did: [steps]. What I expected: [expected result]. What happened instead: [actual result]. Error message (if any): [paste it]. Fix only this problem without removing other features, then list exactly what you changed and how I can test the fix.
One big prompt or many small ones?
For beginners and client work, send one prompt at a time and test between steps. Experienced builders sometimes use one master prompt that tells the AI to work in phases and pause after each. It's faster, but you still need to check every phase. The Script Generator creates both styles.
Questions people ask
Do the same prompts work in Replit, Lovable, Bolt, v0 and Cursor?
Yes, if they're written in plain natural language without tool-specific menu names or commands. That's how every VibeCoder U prompt is written.
Why does the AI change things I didn't ask it to?
Vague or oversized prompts give it room to reinterpret the project. Ask for one change at a time, say what must not change, and ask it to list every change it made.
How do I stop the AI from making things up?
Give it the real facts (services, prices, hours, policies) and include a ground rule: never invent facts about the business, and ask me when information is missing.
